Female Guard  [First Page - Previous]

<<<   I made it to almost the end of the customs counter when out of the corner of my eyes, I noticed a female guard who had been addressing another person turn toward me. The female guard saw my big bag, glanced up at my face, then literally ran around the counter and stopped in front of me. I had witnessed to this female guard on an earlier Bible run. I guess the downside of witnessing to guards is that they remember your face thereafter.

The female guard didn’t even ask me to put my bags through the scanner. Our eyes met and we both knew that I was carrying Bibles. The female guard simply asked for my passport and asked me to bring the Bibles to the confiscation area.

Because the Bibles were in different pockets, I handed the Bibles in the main compartment to the attendant and quickly closed the lid. The female guard wouldn’t have it. She came around, shook the bag and asked me to remove the rest of the Bibles. In the end, she found all but 3 of my Bibles.

I actually liked her demeanor. Although her English was limited, she was cordial and gave the impression of being a nice person. Out of uniform, she was probably a good wife and mother to her children.

As I rounded the counter with my nearly empty bags this time, I smiled and asked the her, who by then was seated and watching the scanner screen with another female guard, “When do you go on vacation?” The other guard, a younger woman who probably spoke better English, immediately grasped the gist of my question and broke into a smile.

The guard who had caught me was slower, and asked, “Why do you want to know?” I replied, “Because you work hard and do your job well. I think you deserve a vacation.” She broke into a smile and said, “Oh, thank you for your…” and then turned to her colleague to ask her for the last word in English. Before her colleague could answer, I volunteered, “Compliment?” She turned back toward me and said yes, and the three of us shared a laughter.

It was tough to retain the humor outside the building. I now had been caught 3 times in a row. I had prayed, fasted, sought prayer cover and had had a load of Bibles that I felt expressed faith in God. Why had He let the guards catch me again?  >>>
