Not Yet Christian  [First Page - Previous]

<<<   He hesitated for a second, then disappeared. He was gone for about 10 minutes, during which time the other guards came around to look me up and down, as well as my three bags. I recognized some of them from previous Bible smuggling runs.

The boss guard returned carrying a large book that was opened. But instead of showing it to me, he put it on the counter and began to debate and flip through the pages with two other guards, which I found somewhat amusing.

Finally he pointed to a bunch of Hades words and said that here was the law. I asked, "What does it say?" He said, “It says you cannot bring in so many Bibles.” I doubted that’s what it said but went along: “Okay, what’s ‘so many’ Bibles?” He replied, “You can only bring in 1 Bible.” I replied, “That’s not what your law says. According to you, your law says I cannot bring in 'so many' Bibles, and I'm not bringing in 'so many' Bibles. Look, I only have three bags of Bibles. It’s not like I have a truck full of them, so you should let me keep these Bibles.”

I don’t know how much of that he understood, but he threw up his hands and began talking in the Hades language, more to himself and at the book than at me. Based on the demeanor of the other guards nearby, none of them seemed all that happy.

Soon a handsome young guard approached and in proficient English began to assert that for me to bring in these many Bibles, I would need a special permission from the Hades government as per the customs law. A discussion ensued and we actually had a polite but intense debate for a good 10 minutes.

Finally I said, “Look, my heart breaks for you guys.” He seemed caught off guard and gave me a puzzled look, so I continued: “I fear for you guys. One day, you will stand before God and He will ask you, ‘Why did you stop my Bibles from reaching my children?’ Are you then going to stand there and say something about your customs law?”

He was silent. Realizing that I had raised my voice, I lowered it and said, “Look, God loves Hades. God loves the Hades people. God loves you.” And before I knew what I was saying, I told him, “And I love you.” Just as I said that, my eyes got teary and I ended up blinking hard not be turn into a total wuss.

Then the unexpected happened. The eyes of the young guard which had been boring into mine got teary and he began to blink hard. I was taken aback but saw something in his eyes, and asked him, “Have you read the Bible?”

He replied, “Yes I have... and I have been to church.” Then I asked, “Are you Christian?”

His answer was breathtaking: “Not yet.”

I took a second to absorb his answer. “Not yet” addressed the timing, not the probability of becoming Christian, which would mean the end of his budding career with the Hades government. And he had declared it within earshot of his colleagues. I waited to see if his look would turn into one of horror at what he had just done, but his look didn’t change. His intense eyes continued to bore into mine. He knew what he had said, and meant it. I think I was more startled by his answer than he was.

I would have loved to have talked to him more about the Lord, but thought he had already gone far enough and another entourage of guards was approaching, so I just  >>>
