Middle School Principal [First Page - Previous] <<< On the return flight, I sat next to a 50+ year old middle school principal leaving on a vacation with 17 of her teachers. The group was clearly in a good mood and the teachers took turns sitting next to the middle school principal (I had the window seat and the middle school principal had the middle seat) to take pictures with her. After the musical chairs over the aisle seat ended, the middle school principal and I began to chat. Her husband had gone overseas to get a PhD from a prestigious university and was a high ranking officer in the Hades government. Both the middle school principal and her husband were loyal members of the Communist party, which has been good to them. I asked the middle school principal if Communist party members can be Christians. She said no. Were they forbidden from becoming one? Not necessarily, but they then had to leave the Communist Party and resign from government posts. The middle school principal said she’s seen a few people do that. What did she think about them? That got the middle school principal off on a long speech about how the god for Communists were Communism, etc., that seemed right out of some Communist Party propaganda manual. When the middle school principal finished her speech, I just nodded my head a couple of times lightly to acknowledge that I had listened attentively but said nothing, and faced forward in my seat again. After a moment of silence, the middle school principal whispered to me in a hushed voice, “Does God... really exist?” Surprised by the middle school principal's question just after a speech that would have made Karl Marx proud, I turned to look at her and found the middle school principal's face totally ashen with fear. Our eyes locked and we both knew that she didn’t believe a word of her own speech. Moreover, the middle school principal was petrified that God really did exist. I spent about 5 minutes telling the middle school principal that God does exist and presented some logical reasons. It was a gentle answer to her question. But when I straightened up in my seat and faced forward again, something or someone told me that I this was not the time for gentleness. I had been tossed a soft pitch, and the Lord wanted me to swing for the fence. So I turned back to the middle school principal and told her about sin, the cross and the consequences of not believing. She was over 50 now and would soon die. If there was indeed nothing more after death, then not believing in God may not be all that bad. But heaven and hell were real, and if she died without believing Jesus so loved her that He died to pay the death penalty for her sins, then she would go to hell and pay that penalty herself by burning forever. What she believed should be function of the truth, not what the Communist Party or anyone else told her to believe. I kept my voice low but as I continued, her face and breathing became increasingly agitated. I didn’t know if she would yell at me or hit me, but there wasn’t much room to swing anyway, so I just kept talking. As soon as I finished, she left her seat without a word and headed toward the rear of the plane. During her absence, which lasted about 20 minutes, I wondered if I had been too direct with her, but didn’t feel that I had. After all, she wasn’t somebody that I would get meet again, so this occasion had to count. The risk of not telling her the full story was graver than the risk of telling her too much. When she returned, she had recomposed herself and struck up a conversation on a light topic that I can no longer remember. It was a friendly chat over nothing. But when the plane landed and she was about to deplane ahead of me, she wished me well with the intense stare that she had during the earlier chat. I thanked her, wished her well as well, and >>>
